"Vivid dreams"

Anya opened her eyes wide and blinked repeatedly to focus on Michelle as her heavy breathing slowed.

“I’m sorry, honey, I know it must’ve been a real good one with you moaning and writhing here, but you said to wake you at this time so you could get down to the studio.”

“Yeah, thanks. Really, thank you. I needed you to do that.” Anya sat up and continued, “Sorry. I still haven’t been able to get a good night’s rest lately. I keep having these types of dreams, ever since that day.”

“It must be the thin air up there in Ambrose Heights!” Michelle said jokingly to lighten mood. She sat back down in her office chair and put her reading glasses on. “So, did you get to see his face this time?”

“No. But his scent, the sound of his voice and that sexy accent of his is etched in my brain. They’ll stay with me, even after I wake up.” Suddenly, Anya recalled something she never saw revealed in other dreams. “Wait! I saw tattoos!”

“Tattoos? Of what?”

“I don’t know, like a tribal armband on one side.” She motioned around her left bicep as she recalled the image in her mind. “The other side looked like a crest, right up at the top of his shoulder. It was very distinctive. Very...sexy.”

“And you’re complaining about sleep when you’re having these most delicious erotic dreams of a tattooed hottie? You can sleep when you’re dead.”

A newborn vampire. A powerful leader. An inconsolable woman. The shaping of their eternity all lies within the eyes.

Steffan Matthews is the devastatingly handsome vampire leader of Ambrose Heights. He cultivates social order and invents concoctions that allow vampires to feel human once again. But Steffan also has a devouring obsession that brings him to his knees.

Her name is Anya.

Steffan sets out to claim Anya, a mortal ripe for the taking, as his mate. But the blackness in the eyes of his newborn should've served as a warning.

Anya is off-limits according to the vampire creed.

It will take the strength of the kinship, the purity of love, a hint of magic, and a subterranean guardian to shield Steffan against the wrath of Ryan Evans, protect him from the fate of the Nemesis, and bridge a passage to his rightful destiny.

His Kind of Cowgirl #RomanceNovels

Today on Tempt Me Tuesday I'm happy to feature an upcoming release by Karen Rock! Enjoy!

Would he still love her…if he knew?

Tanner Hayes smashed Claire's life to pieces when he chose the rodeo over her ten years ago. And now he'd wrecked her truck! Fantastic. She'd lost her husband, the family ranch was mired in debt, her father was recuperating from a stroke and her son was being bullied. Why not throw a reckless bull rider into the mix?

All she'd wanted was a safe, stable life. But with Tanner back in town—and staying on her ranch—nothing was safe, or under control. Not the feelings she'd fought so hard to forget. Not the son she was determined to protect. And certainly not her long-held secret…

Everything happened at once and in slow motion.
A crushing jolt shuddered through the truck. Her wheels skidded sideways. She smacked against the window when her pickup rolled down an embankment, as if punched by something large and lethal. Glass rained deadly sharp. The earth tumbled around her, her truck in spin cycle. When a massive tree loomed, the Chevy slammed into it then stilled.
Winded and stunned, she hung upside-down in her lap belt, blood, metallic and warm, on her tongue, a rushing sound whistling in her ears. Her heartbeat changed and grew slow and rolling in darkness. Something hurt, a long way away. Then nothing.
“Ma’am. Ma’am. Are you all right?” A man’s voice shouted, rousing her. She tried turning her head but pain held it in place. When she opened her mouth, silent panic flew out.
“Hold on. I’m getting you out of there.”
Acrid smoke pierced her consciousness. She closed her eyes against the billowing grit.
This wasn’t happening. It was a dream. No. A nightmare.
A tugging motion jerked her right and left, followed by a ripping sound. Large hands halted her sudden fall.
“Got you.”
Her rescuer cradled her against his chest, his breaths heaving beneath her ear. After carrying her some distance, he lowered her slowly to the ground. Grass scraped against her stinging cheeks and she opened her eyes.
“What?” she croaked, then swiped at the trickle leaking from her mouth. A man wearing a cowboy hat hunched over her, his features blurred.
“You’ve been in an accident. We have. Our trucks collided in the intersection.”
“My truck!” She bolted upright and clutched the swirling ground.
An arm snaked around her back and eased her down. “I called the dispatcher. The fire department’s on the way.”
A wail sounded in the distance and Claire wanted to shriek with it.
Her special day. Her anniversary. Ruined. No. Demolished by this…this…
She squinted upward and focused. A dark swirl of hair brushed across the tall man’s forehead; a light scar zigzagged down his square jaw. Recognition zapped through her.
It couldn’t be…
“Tanner?”
“Hello, Claire.” His mouth went up, just a fraction—the same ready-for-anything smile that had once undone her.
She closed her eyes, heart thudding. Ten years since she’d vowed never to see him again…and now here he stood, two for two in wrecking her life.

Writing Magical Characters #ParanormalRomance

There's something incredibly freeing about writing paranormal stories where the imagination knows no bounds. Our characters can morph into another species, shoot fire from their palms, control the wind, read minds, and so much more. Despite the fantastical elements of a paranormal story, it's still important that the reader believe the characters are possible and are still able to relate to them. Whether writing about magicians, witches, wizards, mermen/mermaids, psychics, or any other character that is magical and mystical, there are a few traits to keep in mind.

Create a personality profile, just like you would with any other character, but remember that your paranormal character is larger than life, too. Witches, wizards, and demigods, for instance, need to convey a sense of power. Below are a list of personality traits to incorporate into your paranormal character--no need to use them all, but these are some to consider:

  1. Intelligence. Supernatural powers require an above average intellect, critical thinking, critical analysis, and the ability to make difficult, fast decisions.
  2. Excellent memory--for rituals, spells, ingredient lists, and things of that nature.
  3. Creativity. Those in the supernatural world need to adapt quickly to new situations, be open-minded to the unexpected.
  4. Self-disciplined and focused. A supernatural being or those with magical powers need to be able to shut out distractions, even under difficult circumstances. They must also be able to resist temptations that we mere mortals wouldn't.
  5. Patience. (especially true of witches) Magic requires endless practice and repetition and the impatient drop out long before they become masters.
  6. Highly trained. Talent is not enough--an inclination toward the mystical is just that...an inclination and nothing more. Wizards, witches, demigods who wield the power of the Universe---are all trained how to manage their supernatural gifts.
  7. Specialized. Not all supernatural beings are created equally---all have specialties that they've honed through practice combined with passion. Perhaps one can control the weather while another can manifest great wealth. Think of it like the medical field where doctors ultimately choose an area of concentration.
  8. Musical. Many forms of magic or supernatural practices involve drumming or chanting or another form of musical communication. Think of your character...can you apply this somehow?
  9. Spiritual. Most forms of magic are linked to religious beliefs and most myths are also linked to a higher form of power. Even an atheist will often engage in a form of meditation.
  10. Well-organized and methodical. Supernatural characters always have more information than most or have ingredients on hand to whip up a magical concoction at a moment's notice. In comedic situations, of course, the disorganized witch creates disaster...but there is always a wizard or more skilled witch present to save the day.
  11. Introverted. Whether it's because of their powers or their need to practice/study the craft, most supernatural and magical beings prefer solitude. After a night or a day in noisy places or with too many people, your character needs to retreat to solitude to recharge his/her energy. Even for the most gregarious and outgoing supernatural beings, there is usually a degree of retreat needed to reconnect with their power.
  12. Ethical, except for your evil antagonist, of course. With supernatural power, comes the weight of moral judgement as to when to unleash it for the sake of the greater good or justice. These ethics may be connected to their spiritual connection or individual conscience. Modern magical ethics of "harm none" or "don't interfere with someone's free will" often come into play. This can be a powerful source of internal conflict with your hero/heroine as they debate on using their powers and the impact that choice could have on a broader scale.
  13. Sharp senses. Supernatural and magical beings are in tune with the world around them, far beyond the senses of a regular human being. They can detect changes in energy, have excellent hearing, and keen eyesight. Their abilities have been fine tuned through intense training and years of awareness. But don't overdo this; for instance, don't make a psychic who can hear the dead also read the minds of the living because it provides little challenge and will ultimately create a boring story. Every character must have a limit to what they can do, even those with supernatural abilities. Remember that the reader must also relate and believe your character and that perfection is boring.
  14. Day job. Most supernatural characters interact with mortals every day--not only to pay the rent, but also to appear normal and make them connect to a community.
  15. Pets. Most supernatural or magical characters have a pet of some kind. This doesn't need to be conventional. In my novel, Impact Zone, the merman has a pet sea lion.
Paranormal stories are made extraordinary by being unique so use as many of the fifteen characteristics in your character as YOU deem appropriate; however, always remember that the reader must relate to and believe in your hero/heroine to keep them engaged.

Keep being sexy and sensational!

"And so it begins..."

“I’ve been waiting for the call.” A seductive male voice answered on the first ring.

“I-I’m sorry. You were waiting for a call?”

“That I was.”

“Sorry. I-I didn’t mean to interrupt you. You must be busy. I’ll call back.”

“But it was your call I was waiting for.”

Isla remained silent, but her mind raced with confusion and a tinge of irritation. There was no customary and simple “hello”. Making the call hadn’t been the easiest thing to do. In fact, she’d made herself sick to her stomach just rehearsing it in her mind. And considering how the conversation began, she felt more than just unprepared.

She felt inept.

Looking down at the card, she remained silent. Trying to decide on either hanging up or continuing the conversation, she traced a red-polished finger over the solitary letter that was prominently displayed.

W.

“Let’s make this simple, shall we?” she stated with authority.

“All right.”

“You and I both know what I’m calling for.”

Warwick, an Elite member of the Vampire Architects, was chosen as Isla Joseph’s Protector at the moment of her birth. Four decades later, he struggles to hide the love he harbors for his charge. When the time comes for her to learn of Warwick’s existence, lust is a beast he can’t contain, nor can Isla fight her instant attraction to this mysterious “stranger”. The pair comes together in a frenzied feast of flesh.

But their intimacy has consequences. Consequences for Isla, when she discovers her lover is a vampire…for the team of Architects, who are struggling to save her from a horrific future…for Warwick, when he’s forced to wipe every trace of himself from Isla’s memory.

Isla, Warwick and the Architects will soon discover love isn’t so easily erased. And while fate may have dark designs for Isla…destiny has other plans.

All She Wants is One True Thing #SneakPeek #RomanceNovels

It's time for a sneak peek into the upcoming release, One True Thing, a romantic thriller that will have you squirming in your seat from the heat between the characters and the danger pressing down on them from all sides. Enjoy the peek inside...

Kobo, iTunes, and Paperback coming soon
 Excerpt...

"Don't you want to...talk or something?" he asked.

"About my feelings?" Her lips twisted. "It sucks. It hurts like hell. It pisses me off. There. I talked about my feelings. We good now?"

He'd never met anyone like her. Vanessa Warren was definitely a one-of-a kind. She sauntered to him, almost like a predator about to go in for the kill, stood on her tiptoes until her breath caressed his chin, and whispered, "Make me believe in something good, something better than a lie."

He grabbed her ass and lifted her up until they were eye-to-eye. Hair licked with fire slipped across his face when she leaned over him, all color and warmth. He wanted this, wanted her. This is why he had come, to feel this again, this agony of desire that he had suppressed for years.

Fingers twisted in the strands of hair that teased him. He crushed her to him, ravaging her mouth like a dying man grasping at life. Tongues clashed. Teeth nipped.  And he fell past a point he had never thought to cross, not that he cared, not that it mattered. In his mind, he could see the lights of the city, blurring with speed and spinning beneath them.

God, she felt good.  Intoxicating. Her lips nibbled across his neck.

“I shouldn’t want you so much, but I do. I can’t stop myself,” she whispered.

“Why do you want me?” He curled his fingers into her hair and pulled her up to his face. “Tell me.”

“You wanted me when you didn’t know who I was. We were just two people, strangers, without a past or a future. I knew you wanted to fuck me against that mural, beneath that tarp, I saw it in your eyes, thought about it all damn day. Then tonight there you were. You walked up those stairs like a predator, seeking me out, sweeping me away.”

“You want to be swept away?”

“Desperately.”

Silky strands slipped from his fingers as her head moved across his chest and he surrendered as he had known he would. He carried her from the balcony to the bedroom and fell backward on the mattress with her velvet-encased body draped across him.

“Damn dress.” She propped herself above him and grimaced. “Help me out of it?”

“With pleasure,” he whispered against her neck.

His fingers moved to the discreet zipper at her side and — with his gaze never leaving hers — he slid it down.  She shrugged it off her left shoulder. As if unwrapping a Christmas gift, he wasted no time in sliding the rest from her lean, toned body. Velvet hissed down her torso and slipped from her legs. Clad only in strapless bra and panties with her hair falling in wild layers past her shoulders, she kicked the tangled material off her feet and flashed him a devilish smile.

“You’re deadly.” But what a way to die.

Off came the bra. She grinned like the seductress she was and tossed it away.  “I’ll be gentle.”

“Don’t lie to me anymore.” His hands covered her breasts, claiming them.  “Game’s over.”

“Wrong, Nic. It’s just getting started.” She pushed his shirt from his shoulders and breathed against his neck.

He grabbed a handful of her hair and crushed his mouth to hers. No going slow. The need to satiate the lust was too strong, too overpowering. Every kiss, each touch set off a chain reaction of moans and longing.

Somehow — as if in a trance — he stripped free from his clothes. There was no going back now. But it’d been too long since he’d had this release, this intensity of emotion, felt the wildness pumping through his veins. Years of abstinence abandoned in one night. He’d think about why later. He had to have her. Now. Fast. Hard.

Legs wrapped around him, she urged him to thrust inside her. Take her.  Mindless passion erupted when he entered her with one sure, hard movement. Hands were everywhere. Glorious. Every sensation electrified his skin. Their lips found each other in the dark as they moved as one ferocious animal with one singular thought: possession.

“It’s been too long,” he said into her mouth.

“I love the way you feel inside me,” she said. “Please, Nic. God, Nic.”

That’s all it took. The sound of his name coming out of her mouth at that moment. The huskiness of her voice, the warmth of her body encompassing his, her hand pulling at his hair. Damn.

But she was with him all the way, biting his shoulder and clawing at his back.   Energy bled from his soul, powerful and intoxicating. Sweat soaked their bodies like a layer of oil. Damp hair stuck to his neck and forehead.

“Don’t move,” she instructed against his ear. “Stay inside me.”

He pushed his hands into the hair against the sides of her face and struggled to decipher her features in the dark. “I couldn’t wait.  It was too—"

“You’re not complaining are you?”  She squeezed her thighs around his hips and laughed.

“Me?  No, I was just—"

“You talk too damn much. Next time we’ll go slow.”

“Next time?”

“Ten minutes from now too soon for you?”  Her tongue flicked across his lips.

“Make it five.”

Hours later he watched her sleeping, smiled at her little snore, and disentangled himself from her arms. He couldn't sleep, not with questions raging through his mind. Naked, he walked to the balcony and looked out over the quiet streets of Barcelona.

Too many years had been spent rushing from one project to the next and rejecting all emotional entanglements. Yet here he was with a woman that came with a warning label—and he didn't want to be anywhere else.

Looking out the sea where a distant ship had docked, its lights illuminating its deck against the dark water and sky, he thought of the past he'd left behind eleven years ago.

He should have told her — somewhere between confessing his love for coffee and making love to her — he should have admitted his tainted past that would surely be brought to light by some ambitious reporter now that their pretense had become reality.

"Now this is what I like to see when I wake up in the middle of the night." She curved her hands over his ass and bit his back.

He smiled at the greeting.

When she stepped next to him — also bare-assed naked — and stretched her arms to the sky, he sighed at the vision she presented. Moonlight bathed her bare breasts, not overly large and not too small, just right for the size of his hands. Hair shimmered down her back as she tipped her head back, eyes closed, and sighed.

"I think my next resort will be a nudist colony," he said, "as long as you plan on visiting me as often as possible."

"I'm always seeking a getaway." She faced him, her finger tracing a line up the center of his chest. "Tell me what you're thinking. Regretting our little lie already? Scared of what being affiliated with me might do to you?"

"Nope." He snagged her hand in his. "I'm more complicated than you may have thought when you picked me up on that dusty road. I'm thinking of that."

"Ah, I see." She shrugged. "Does this have something to do with the bloody past that Pam made sure I knew about at the party?"

He gaped at her, shocked at her words. "You know?"

"Not really," she admitted, linking her arms behind his waist and looking up at him. "All I know is that you had a daughter, Pam was the godmother, and that there was a funeral. I'm sorry about that...it must have been hard to bury a child."

He never talked about this with anyone. Not a soul. He slipped his fingers through her hair and sighed. "It was a long time ago."

The fact that she didn't press him to tell his sorry tale warmed him to her even more. She accepted that there was something horrible looming in his past without one selfish thought about how it could impact her. He wanted to tell her —here in the moonlight with the sea breeze kissing their naked skin after multiple orgasms had broken down his defenses — yet he didn't want to let the past shadow the present or distract from the danger chasing her.

"You don't need to stay with me," she whispered. "We both got what we wanted, had some fun, but you can go. I'll make a statement that we broke up. The world doesn't need to know your story. Just go if that's what you need to do. No hard feelings."

He knew he should take her up on that offer, get dressed, kiss her goodbye, and go back to his life with a fabulous memory of making love to liquid fire. Yet he couldn't seem to move away from her.

"Are you really staying in Barcelona to work as an art restorer at the museum?" he asked. "Despite everything—"

"Yes, I am." She lifted her chin a bit higher. "It's a dream come true for me and I'm not letting these bastards stop me from doing it."

"Then would you be open to..."

"To?" she asked when he let the sentence drift off.

"Dating me? For real? I've been called boring in the past so—"

"You are far from boring." She smiled and broke eye contact. "Can I help with the mural?"

"Yes." He brushed his thumb over her cheekbone. "I'm hoping you will anyway."

"I'd love to go on a date with you, Dominic." She kissed the center of his chest and his heart melted. "

"Then that's what we'll do. When all this is over, we'll date each other like proper adults."

He wrapped her in his arms, resting his chin on the top of her head and closing his eyes. He wished he could stay here, like this, forever, but knew his days of hiding had come to an end the moment she'd stopped to help him on a dusty, country road.

"Desire, unleashed"

“You’re so enticing. Your looks, your mannerisms, your body...” Isla licked her lips. “Your dedication.”

“Yes.” The single word was laced with lust. Warwick’s head dipped, his gaze locked on her lips.

“You’ve watched me.”

“Every day.” He moved closer still.

“You wanted me.”

“So bad. And for so long.” Warwick’s lips held steady within inches of hers. “You haven’t unleashed all of that pent-up desire yet.”

“Oh, I’m about to.”

The passion spilling from Isla burned hotter than the surface of the sun and more needful than breath itself. With fast tongues and frenzied movements, they kissed ravenously.

Warwick, an Elite member of the Vampire Architects, was chosen as Isla Joseph’s Protector at the moment of her birth. Four decades later, he struggles to hide the love he harbors for his charge.
